2026 BMW iX: The Ultimate Upgrade for a Smoother Ride

The The BMW iX has sparked controversy since it was initially made available for purchase. For the 2022 model year, much of this was attributed to its love-it-or-hate-it styling , and that’s quite unfortunate. No matter your opinion on the iX’s design, it’s challenging to dispute that BMW’s electric flagship model doesn’t make for an exceptionally beautiful luxury vehicle.

For 2026, BMW determined that the iX required some minor adjustments. And they've introduced a new base model to attract purchasers in the increasingly competitive luxury electric vehicle crossover segment. Although the design hasn’t undergone major alterations compared to before, I believe the modifications BMW implemented for this latest model year have transformed their already outstanding electric luxury SUV into a stronger contender. These updates include enhanced power and increased range without significantly raising the price tags.

Full Disclosure BMW invited me to visit their North American base in New Jersey to test drive the 2026 iX series. Additionally, they covered all meal expenses during our trip.

What's Upcoming and Past for 2026

In terms of design, you likely won’t spot significant distinctions between the 2025 iX and its successor coming out in 2026. Externally, expect minor adjustments such as a revised front grille featuring color-coordinated inserts instead of black ones, updated headlamps, varied rim styles reaching up to 23 inches in diameter, and a crucial illuminated kidney-shaped grille That also varies based on the trim level with distinct inlay patterns. For those who prefer a sharper, edgier appearance, there’s an M-Sport exterior upgrade available for $4,500. This choice lends the vehicle a more assertive look through additional vents and altered body-side moldings. BMW is also introducing three new paint hues; two of these are distinct variations of blue.

If you didn't like how the iX used To see it, you won’t suddenly become a fan of its appearance. In my opinion, people are overly critical regarding the iX’s styling. Certainly, it represents bold design work from BMW, yet one cannot deny that it lacks a strong visual impact—particularly when following it on the highway.

It will be challenging to spot much difference internally as well. This is actually quite positive. No matter your opinion on the outside, you must acknowledge the iX has one of the best interiors in the industry Few vehicles boast as intriguing shapes, hues, textures, and design elements as the iX. With various customization options available, you might find yourself choosing between plant-based materials or genuine leather, along with suedelike surfaces and sparkling crystal embellishments around the controls. This combination creates quite an appealing ambiance. The cabin exudes a futuristic vibe reminiscent of a concept car. Moreover, this model offers exceptional space for up to five adults, ensuring comfort all around. Clearly, you’re beginning on solid ground here.

The main issue I have with the iX’s cabin is the noise from closing the doors and their operation. They sound thin and inexpensive. While I can’t be certain, my assumption would be that this could stem from both the car’s carbon-fiber structure and its frameless windows. However, considering everything else, it seems like a minor inconvenience.

The technology within this vehicle largely remains unchanged from the previous model. It features BMW’s driver-focused iDrive system, which includes a curved display merging a 12.9-inch instrument panel with a 14.9-inch central touch screen. Similar to other BMW models, mastering the new iDrive 8.5 might take some initial adjustment; however, after becoming familiar with it, using it becomes quite intuitive, partly due to the elegant crystal control knob. Should you prefer not to interact directly with the screen, the automobile's advanced voice recognition feature operates effectively and comprehensively. Additionally, for those who wish to avoid engaging with BMW’s interface altogether, they have the option to connect wirelessly. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto That will project a map directly onto your gauge cluster. The head-up display (an optional feature for the xDrive45 and xDrive60 models) is also among the finest available in the market today.

In terms of driver assistance features, the iX incorporates an option available on many other BMW models: Driving Assistant Plus. This is BMW’s hands-off driving technology capable of functioning on highways at speeds up to 85 mph, making it fairly competent as a Level 2 system—though slightly trailing GM’s top-tier Super Cruise in performance.

More To Choose From

When it initially launched, the iX came with two trims: xDrive50 and M60. In 2026, the xDrive50 will be renamed to xDrive60. the M60 Transforms into the M70. Below those models lies the entirely fresh entry-level variant: the xDrive45. Even though it’s the most affordable iX available, beginning at $76,325 including destination fees, you still receive quite a bit for your investment. The xDrive45 features standard all-wheel-drive capability due to motors located on both the front and back axles. Combined, they deliver 402 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, powered by a 100 kWh battery capable of charging up to 175 kW via a DC fast charger. This enables it to go from 10% charged to 80% in approximately 34 minutes. Weighing close to 5,600 lbs according to BMW, it manages to accelerate from zero to sixty miles per hour in just under 4.9 seconds, offering an estimated driving range of 312 miles when driven conservatively. Given such impressive figures, it isn’t shocking that BMW anticipates this will become their top-selling iX model. The vehicle I evaluated had a total price tag of $96,275.

The xDrive45 comes with various luxurious amenities such as 20-inch wheels, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, numerous active safety features, and BMW’s quirky yet enjoyable IconicSounds system. Additionally, you receive a Harman/Kardon sound system along with a wireless phone charger.

Should you desire additional power and extended range, consider upgrading to the mid-range model, the xDrive60, which starts at $89,675. Including several optional features, the vehicle I tested was priced at $110,975. This upgrade provides 536 horsepower—a 20-horsepower increase—and 564 pound-feet of torque. Moreover, due to its larger 113 kWh battery pack, the driving distance extends significantly. According to BMW, the xDrive60 boasts a maximum range of 364 miles per charge. Of course, pushing its capabilities will impact this figure; however, rest assured as it supports rapid charging via DC fast-charging technology capable of reaching between 10% and 80% capacity within just 35 minutes. By opting for the xDrive60, apart from retaining all specifications found in the 45 variant, you also gain extras like a panoramic sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and LED adaptive cornering lamps alongside enhanced performance and reach.

I understand; you’re into high-speed driving—hot, fierce, powerful speed. BMW created the perfect car for you: the M70 variant of their iX model. Let’s talk about why it stands out. The twin electric motors crank up the output to 650 horsepower and deliver an astounding 811 lb-ft of torque. Don’t be shocked if these numbers actually surpass expectations because they often do. This vehicle accelerates faster than most electric vehicles, propelling this hefty 5,850-pound SUV from zero to sixty mph in merely 3.6 seconds. Its performance remains impressive as you accelerate further, reaching a maximum velocity capped at 155 mph. That’s quite something. However, with such increased potency comes reduced efficiency. Compared to the regular version, the range dips slightly down to 303 miles due to having the same size battery pack. Given that models starting around $112,675 should ideally offer better mileage, this drop isn’t ideal. Nonetheless, both variants share similar charging capabilities since they use the exact same type of battery.

With the M70 model priced at $122,675 after testing, you gain access to all features included in the models beneath it, along with additional upgrades such as larger wheels, adaptive air suspension, rear-wheel steering, M-Sport brakes, transparent tail lamps, climate-controlled front seats, a three-spoke steering wheel, complete LED lighting, Parking Assistant Plus, and a high-end Bowers & Wilkins Diamond sound system. Additionally, this top-tier version includes several exterior styling elements that emphasize its premium status within the lineup. Remember that regardless of whether you choose a base-model iX, most options available in higher trims can be added individually.

At The Helm of the 2026 iX

No matter which version you choose, the BMW iX perfectly encapsulates what a luxurious drive should entail. Despite having the massive 23-inch wheels found on the M70 model, piloting it remains a delightfully smooth endeavor. Its agility is impressive considering its size; corners are taken smoothly without excessive lean, and accelerating hard brings forth Hans Zimmer’s compositions to accompany your journey seamlessly. Whether equipped with xDrive45 or upgraded to the M70 variant, navigating through the winding roads of the Hudson Valley feels effortless across all trims due to the vehicle's balanced design and almost ideal 50/50 weight distribution. However, it isn’t flawless—steering feedback is virtually nonexistent, but perhaps that wasn’t high on your list when choosing an iX anyway. The lack thereof is offset by commendable handling aided significantly by the available rear-wheel steer technology.

One standout feature for me – irrespective of the trim level – is the excellent tuning of the suspension system. Despite traversing incredibly bumpy roads typical of the northeastern U.S., the iX performed impressively, giving me the impression that I was cruising on smooth new asphalt. While BMW isn’t the only automaker with commendable damping capabilities, their non-i-series models often have suspensions so harsh that you feel every bump as though your bones were shattering. It’s refreshing to see that the engineers behind the iX avoided this issue, even if it meant sacrificing some handling finesse.

The iX is an exceptionally delightful haven when cruising on the highway. Thanks to the vigilant Driving Assistant Plus, which monitors you closely, covering vast distances becomes quite effortless within the vehicle’s remarkably comfy seating. BMW’s engineering team has done an outstanding job at ensuring that the external noise stays minimal inside the cabin.

You shouldn't worry about the grille.

If you were not a fan of the BMW iX previously, its subtly modified appearance might not change your opinion. Nevertheless, regardless of whether you like how it looks or not, you must admit that it excels significantly in its function. This is crucial because competition within the $80,000-to-$100,000 premium electric SUV market is intense.

If you're a fan of cutting-edge technology, high efficiency and a lovely driving experience, then you should be able to look past the iX's exterior. If you're not able to do that then I'm sorry, but you're missing out on one seriously good car. The iX has mastered what a luxury EV should be, and while it might not be everyone's cup of tea, those who know how good it is will appreciate it even more with these subtle updates.
