While Italy's renowned Lake Como often attracts celebrities and high-profile individuals, its nearby northern Italian counterpart, Lake Garda, located approximately two hours by car east of Milan, offers a more relaxed and friendly ambiance. Among the most elegant hideaways on Lake Garda is one particularly distinguished residence. Grand Hotel Fasano , which first opened in 1888 as a hunting lodge for the Habsburg imperial family (an interesting tidbit for fans of Empress Elisabeth of Austria’s history like me). During both World Wars, this hotel had close proximity to the conflict zones; it served as a military hospital during World War II. Currently managed by the third generation—members of the Mayr family—it stands today as an elegantly understated sanctuary steeped in historical significance. Having relaunched in April specifically for the upcoming 2025 tourist season, Grand Hotel Fasano has introduced four brand-new suites along with a fully refurbished Aqva Spa (we'll discuss more about these enhancements shortly).
Who's it for?
Couples and families seeking vintage elegance combined with modern conveniences will find this neoclassically styled hotel perfectly fitting their desires. Despite its majestic appearance true to its title, the atmosphere remains invigoratingly fresh. Ideal for those looking to escape during warmer months, Grand Hotel Fasano provides both serenity and picturesque vistas for its visitors.

The location
Nestled within Italy, Lake Garda stands as the country’s biggest lake, situated just a couple hours’ drive from Milan. It offers a quieter escape compared to the ever-popular Lake Como. You can enjoy its picturesque scenery through a Consolini Paolo cruise circling Isola del Garda. Alternatively, for those who prefer staying indoors, explore the somber former residence of the provocative writer Gabriele D'Annunzio. Before concluding your experience with a supervised wine tasting session, take time to admire Conti Thun's 16th-century underground vaults.
Among the grandest getaways at Lake Garda stands the majestic Grand Hotel Fasano, originally established in 1888 as a hunting lodge exclusively for the illustrious Habsburg imperial clan.
The rooms
The Grand Hotel Fasano features a total of 86 rooms and suites distributed across several areas: the primary structure, the adjacent Villa Principe which was originally used for employee quarters, and an additional modern section containing four spacious suites. These lodging options share a cohesive design theme characterized by understated elegance enhanced with elements such as button-tufted bed frames and refined shell-inspired furniture pieces. My personal favorite was the executive suite equipped with a standalone tub in the en-suite bath and featuring both a sitting area and a balcony offering panoramic views of Lake Garda—a sight so captivating that it left me spellbound each morning upon first glance.

The food and drink
Guests can start their day in the spacious breakfast room—or outside on the nearby lemon-adorned terrace—where they enhance the generous buffet with custom-made egg dishes. At noon, head over to the open-air Magnolia restaurant, surrounded by ancient magnolias estimated to be around 200 years old. Sage-green checkered tablecloths paired with coordinating glassware set off a zesty twist on cacio e pepe using maccheroncini pasta. Just beside it, for dinners only, lies Il Pescatore where strands of dark linguine coated in ink from cuttlefish and black squid sauce evoke flavors of the Mediterranean Sea.
Il Fagiano, which operates exclusively during evening hours, should not be overlooked. This single Michelin-starred establishment is surrounded by wooden decor, providing an intimate atmosphere where you can enjoy dishes like celeriac ravioli and boldly flavored spaghetti enhanced with oysters and raspberries. Another must-do experience here includes nightcaps at the dimly lit lounge called Rama’s. Don’t miss out on trying their signature drink, the Sunset on the Lake—a cocktail infused with chamomile and green apple-flavored Campari that pays homage to the stunning views around. As twilight transitions the sky from shades of orange to golden hues, there isn't a more perfect place to appreciate this spectacle than at expansive La Terrazza, holding a refreshing Amaretto Sour in your hands.
Staff and service
A blend of local Italians and people from various cultures make up the welcoming staff at Grand Hotel Fasano. When I arrived, the establishment had only recently launched its new season, and this excitement was clearly evident. Throughout my stay, I shared numerous interactions with them. buongiorno With employees patrolling the hallways, coffee was continuously replenished before we even asked, and the well-informed concierge was enthusiastic about offering suggestions.

Accessibility
Wheelchairs and six ground-floor guest rooms are provided for guests who have difficulty moving around easily.
Spa and Wellness: The Aqva Spa
The therapies and bodily pamperings utilizing Sothys products are indeed alluring (notably the hallmark 110-minute 1888 treatment, which includes an exfoliation, a clay wrapping, a massage, and a face care session). However, what truly enticed me was the tranquility zones where I wished to spend countless leisurely hours reading and munching on free dried mangos. Following a refreshing swim in the interior pool adorned with majestic pillars, continue your unwind on one of the draped beds or upon the pristine white lounge chairs set against sunlight filtering through expansive glass panes.
