and act in emergencies.
Thanks to a substantial contribution from the Rick Case Automotive Group, the American Heart Association’s Greater Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter now offers CPR Anytime Training Kits to nonprofits, educational institutions, medical facilities, and municipal administrations within Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

"The tale revolves around how distributing these CPR kits impacts our South Florida area,” stated Rita Case, President and CEO of Rick Case Automotive Group. “It’s part of a long-term effort that significantly saves lives. Statistics reveal that each year approximately 350,000 cases of cardiac arrest happen outside hospitals with nearly 90 percent mortality rates among individuals of various age groups affected under such circumstances. Yet, administering CPR promptly can boost survival chances up to 80%. Time really makes a difference.”
The American Heart Association emphasizes that to reduce fatalities from the approximately 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring annually, it’s crucial to boost the number of individuals who call 911 when encountering such emergencies. Additionally, these responders should perform high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and promptly utilize automated external defibrillators (AEDs). Particularly important for saving young lives are CPR kits designed specifically for children and infants. Each year, over 23,000 kids suffer from cardiac arrest outside hospitals; about 40% of these incidents relate to sporting activities, and almost 20% involve infants. Sadly, Broward County has seen rising infant mortality rates, leading Florida in this statistic. Notably, up to 15%, sometimes even reaching 10%, of unanticipated infant deaths unexpectedly result from cardiac arrest.
Broward County Impact
Due to the contribution from Rick Case Automotive Group in Broward County:
- Over the course of three years, 750 CPR training kits designed for infants, children, and adults will be disseminated across various hospitals and neonatal intensive care units within Broward County. These CPR training kits have already been provided to both Broward Health and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
- The entities getting the kits encompass the City of Sunrise's Community Fire Rescue team and Summer BreakSpot, where personnel will utilize them to instruct summer camp participants.
- As part of a continuing initiative, CPR in Schools Training Kits have been provided to Broward County Public Schools.
- The Broward Healthy Start Coalition of Broward County has been granted 1,000 CPR training kits which they plan to share with families throughout Broward County.
- Via the Broward Community & Family Health Centers, residents and personnel at the Northwest Gardens Housing Authority in Fort Lauderdale can use these kits to obtain certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- The proposal for the Broward County Public Library system aims to implement a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan across all library locations.
-
The Broward AWARE! initiative from the Children's Services Council of Broward County, aimed at enhancing children’s safety and well-being as well as preventing child abuse, has been equipped with 10 CPR training kits that they are now using.
Miami-Dade County Impact
At various Miami-Dade College campus libraries within Miami-Dade County, personnel will instruct students in the hands-only CPR method. Meanwhile, the City of Hialeah plans to educate civilian fire department staffers, municipal workers, and residents on this life-saving skill.
“I am dedicated to making sure additional families receive the instruction, resources, and assurance needed to take action,” stated Case, who is part of the Nation of Lifesavers. “Collectively, we have the power to save lives.”

To back the Nation of Lifesavers initiative, the American Heart Association’s CPR Anytime Training Kit provides straightforward, step-by-step guidance enabling individuals—even those as young as five—to transition from observers to rescuers within just 30 minutes. This brief session has the potential to add several years to an individual's lifespan when performed during cardiac arrest emergencies. In situations where medical professionals aren’t available at home, having received CPR training means one can act immediately instead of waiting for emergency responders to reach the location.
We are deeply grateful to Rita and her team for their ongoing support as we anticipate everyone learning CPR and becoming part of our Nation of Lifesavers. These kit distributions will significantly help achieve this goal," stated Marisol Vera, Executive Director at the American Heart Association Greater Miami/Fort Lauderdale. "In the past two years since launching the Nation of Lifesavers initiative, we've observed a 6% rise in bystanders feeling confident about performing any form of CPR, increasing from 33% to 39%. This advancement can be attributed primarily to our focus on Hands-Only CPR.
