
General Motors and LG Energy Solution have declared a significant advancement in battery tech, aiming to bring lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells into the market.
These cells are intended for GM's upcoming electric trucks and full-sized SUVs, signaling progress in the electric vehicle (EV) industry.
GM stated that this partnership intends to establish them as the leading automotive manufacturer to incorporate LMR batteries into electric vehicles.
Ultium Cells, a collaborative effort between GM and LG Energy Solution, plans to start commercial production of LMR prismatic batteries in the U.S. by 2028. Pre-production processes will kick off at an LG Energy Solution site by the end of 2027.
The final production design will undergo validation at GM’s upcoming Battery Cell Development Center in Warren, Michigan, and LG Energy Solution's facility.
LMR battery cells are notable for their use of manganese, a more cost-effective material compared to cobalt, which is traditionally used in battery cathodes.
The new LMR prismatic battery cell developed by engineers from both companies boasts a 33% increase in energy density compared to leading lithium iron phosphate (LFP) based cells, while maintaining comparable costs.
Starting from 2015, GM has been investigating manganese-based lithium-ion battery cells, speeding up the progress on LMR cell technology at its Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center.
Cooperative initiatives have resulted in improvements in cathode materials, electrolytes, additives, design formats, and cell assembly techniques, tackling past issues related to performance and longevity connected with LMR technology.
Wonjoon Suh, Executive Vice President and Head of LG Energy Solution’s Advanced Automotive Battery division, stated, "We're thrilled to launch the inaugural LMR prismatic cells for electric vehicles. This achievement represents the peak of our extensive research and investments spanning several decades."
