According to Automotive News Nissan is thinking about altering its strategy for producing the Sentra in Mexico and might utilize the facility in Mississippi to manufacture the car instead.

The report didn’t indicate that Nissan was completely exiting Mexico; however, it implies they might redirect manufacturing efforts in this nation for Sentras destined for the U.S. market.

That appears to align with a report from April 21. When The Clarion-Ledger reported that the Canton plant might lead a new American initiative aimed at capitalizing on potential opportunities, whatever tariffs step down from President Donald Trump.

At the New York Auto Show, Vinay Shahani, who leads sales and marketing for Nissan USA, took extra effort to praise the Madison County plant As a starting point for a potential new American strategy.

I believe we have a chance with this tariff issue, Shahani stated during an interview with Motor1 At the New York Auto Show, they said, “We’re incredibly lucky to have a strong manufacturing presence in the U.S., particularly at our facilities in Smyrna, Tennessee, and in Canton, Mississippi. This gives us great opportunities to showcase and utilize some of the models we produce here in America.”

On May 14, Amanda Plecas from Nissan North America informed the Clarion Ledger that their plans remain unchanged but did not explicitly comment on whether the Sentra model will continue to be produced in Mississippi.

"We frequently assess our industrial strategy alongside our supplier partners according to market demands. We haven’t made any modifications to our plan," Plecas stated.

A fluid situation

In late April, Nissan verified for the Clarion Ledger. that it intends to revamp its strategies for electric vehicle manufacturing at its facility in Canton, Mississippi.

This followed reports indicating that the firm was planning to discontinue the development of two electric vehicle sedans scheduled for production in Madison County.

Then, on May 13, Nissan declared additional expense reductions, stating it plans to cut down 11,000 positions and shut down seven manufacturing facilities.

Nissan Its profits saw a significant drop. The operating profit amounted to 69.8 billion yen ($472 million) for the 12-month period ending in March, marking an 88% reduction compared to the prior year.

The latest round of job reductions at Nissan will push their overall decrease in the U.S. workforce to approximately 20,000 roles, following an earlier announcement about cutting 9,000 American-based positions. The company also intends to slash its manufacturing facilities from 17 down to 10 and aims to simplify component variety by 70%.
