Police Arrest Suspect in Eugene Dumpster Fire That Ravaged Car Shop and Luxury Vehicle

On Sunday, May 11, the Eugene Police were called to a dumpster fire at The Sports Car Shop located at 288 West Sixth Avenue.

The Eugene Springfield Fire Department (ESF) also showed up and discovered an old fire smoldering in a dumpster beneath the southern edge of the car repair shop’s overhang.

They extinguished the fire and the ESF fire marshal responded.

"Surveillance video showed a man at 5:27 a.m. walking east on W. 6th Alley then rummaging through the dumpster before lighting cardboard inside on fire and walking away," EPD stated. "The dumpster was scorched, the wall of the business covered in soot, and there was possible damage to wiring inside electrical conduit and the connected fluorescent light, as well as heat damage to a black 2020 Land Rover EVOC."

At approximately 11:50 a.m. on May 11, an officer observed the suspect at the intersection of W. 11th Avenue and Hayes Street, subsequently stopping him.

The individual was recognized as Darren Martin Rasmussen, aged 44.

He was taken to Lane County Jail and detained on an arson charge in the second degree.
