BUENA VISTA TWP, MI — One of the leading job providers in Saginaw County said they are cutting down their staff.
Officials at Nexteer Automotive mentioned that the company reduced its workforce by approximately 80 employees across its manufacturing facility in Buena Vista Township and its global headquarters located in Auburn Hills.
In 2022, the organization had over 3,900 employees statewide, with approximately 3,800 working in Buena Vista Township within Saginaw County, as reported by the economic development agency, Saginaw Future Inc.
Recently, Nexteer had to make the difficult choice of downsizing our workforce in the U.S. This adjustment aims to match our operations with present needs and anticipated requirements up until 2025 and further," stated Herve Boyer, Senior Vice President at Nexteer Automotive. "We are collaborating closely with all impacted workers to offer necessary assistance along with severance benefits designed to ease their passage through this period.
Based on information from Saginaw Future, Nexteer Automotive retains the second position on the list of Saginaw County companies with the most employees, coming right after Covenant Healthcare.
A decrease of 80 employees would equate to roughly a 2% reduction in the total number of staff based in Michigan for this company.
"As we maneuver through the ever-changing landscape of the global business arena, our team stays dedicated to a sustainable future by enhancing our competitiveness for the long-term benefit of our employees, customers, and various stakeholders," stated Boyer in the release.
Nexteer Automotive serves as an international provider of automotive components, specializing in electric and hydraulic steer-by-wire systems, steering column assemblies, driveline solutions, along with advanced driver assistance systems and technology that facilitates autonomous driving for vehicle makers.
As of 2022, the corporation managed 27 production facilities across the globe. In the United States, the sole manufacturing location for Nexteer Automotive was situated in Buena Vista Township. At this point, the firm had approximately 13,000 employees internationally.
The Nexteer Automotive plant located in Buena Vista Township, which was previously known as Delphi Saginaw Steering Systems, turned into an independently operated fully-owned subsidiary of General Motors after Delphi Corp. exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009. That same year, GM renamed the facility to Nexteer Automotive.
In 2010, GM sold Nexteer Automotive to China’s Pacific Century Motors. The subsequent year, when AVIC Automobile, which was owned by China, bought a 51 percent share in Pacific Century Motors, they became the majority shareholder in Nexteer Automotive.
