GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An ex-member of the Michigan Army National Guard was taken into custody for reportedly plotting to execute a mass shooting at a U.S military facility in Warren.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan has pinpointed 19-year-old Ammar Abdulmajid-Mohamed Said as the suspect. He resides in Melvindale, approximately eight miles west of Detroit.
It is anticipated that Said will face two federal charges on Wednesday: one for allegedly trying to supply material assistance to a foreign terrorist group, and another for disseminating information about an explosive device.
According to the USAO Said informed two undercover agents that he intended to carry out a mass shooting at the Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command ( TACOM ) facility in Warren for the benefit of ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The two undercover agents consented to assist him in executing the assault.
It was claimed he "gave material support to the attack plan by supplying armor-piercing ammo and magazines, as well as using his drone for surveillance over TACOM."
The underage individual reportedly coached the undercover operatives on firearm usage, taught them how to create Molotov cocktails, and supplied details about accessing TACOM and identifying the specific structure they were aiming for.
Tuesday—the planned date for the assault—Said was apprehended after he went to a location close to TACOM and dispatched his drone as part of the attack scheme," stated the USAO in a press release. "Due to the threat he poses to public safety and the likelihood of flight, the U.S. Attorney’s Office intends to request that the court detain Said prior to trial.
Faces up to 40 years in prison upon conviction.
Acting U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. states that his office will not accept any form of terrorism.
ISIS is a vicious terrorist group intent on killing Americans," Gorgon asserted. "Aiding ISIS or any other terror outfit in planning violent actions is not just an abhorrent offense—it poses a danger to our whole country and our lifestyle. We will not stand for these crimes or threats in our jurisdiction, and we will employ the entirety of legal power at our disposal against individuals involved in terrorism.
The USAO declined to address Said’s military record.
