Westover Auto Salvage Leads Western Massachusetts as First Participant in Innovative SHiFT Vehicle Retirement Program

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – Westover Auto Salvage has become the inaugural automotive recycling center in western Massachusetts to join forces with the SHiFT Vehicle Retirement Initiative.

The SHiFT initiative is a nationwide effort designed to eliminate End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) from roads and promote ecologically sound practices for vehicle dismantling.

The firm based in Belchertown revealed this week about reaching an important landmark, which represents considerable progress toward decreasing car-generated pollution and fostering a more circular economic system locally. This collaboration mandates that involved recycling facilities pledge to completely decommission a vehicle’s motor upon entry into the SHiFT program, guaranteeing that these high-pollution, inefficient cars are taken out of use indefinitely.

"At locations such as ours, we adopt a scientific method for automobile recycling and use precision techniques akin to a surgeon’s scalpel when handling end-of-life vehicles to maximize the amount of materials that can be reclaimed," explained Brian Bachand, CEO of Westover Auto Salvage.

In celebration of their collaboration, Westover will conduct a special presentation featuring the eco-friendly disassembly of a decommissioned Toyota Tacoma—the initial automobile they acquired via SHiFT. Attendees will get an insider’s view into the process where end-of-life vehicles undergo safe and scientific depollution, part stripping, and responsible recycling procedures.

In contrast to conventional salvage efforts, Westover adopts a thorough, eco-friendly method for disassembling vehicles, reducing waste and optimizing recyclable materials. Additionally, this site is among only three locations in Massachusetts with a High Voltage Vehicle Certification, permitting them to manage, clean out hazardous substances from, and dismantle electric and hybrid car batteries—essential skills as the transport industry moves towards more sustainable power sources.

The SHiFT program mirrors increasing national initiatives aimed at tackling climate change through decreased dependence on old vehicles that exacerbate pollution and poor fuel efficiency.
